Introduction

Massage has been practiced in one form or another for thousands of years and its beneficial effects are well established. There are now several specialized forms of massage within the whole spectrum, Sports and Remedial massage are two specialist areas that have a fundamentally different approach from all other styles of therapy.

Sports and Remedial Massage have evolved with time using techniques from various cultures and from other professions such as osteopathic methods or physiotherapy assessments and techniques.

Now at the Golf Injury Clinic we incorporate Pilates into our massage sessions not only for corrective exercise but also for stretching and mobilizing clients prior, during or after treatments. Sports and Remedial Massage is utilised as a preventative, corrective and rehabilitative therapy.

Most Golfers will experience tightness and tenderness in various muscles associated with golf which can be exacerbated by poor posture, poor golf technique, no warm-up or preparation and intense practice regimes.

Specific points of tenderness can be where muscles join the tendons or where the tendons join onto the bones. However, golfers also can experience spasm in bellies of the muscles themselves. To alleviate these problems, ‘Remedial and Sports' massage can be used.

Golf Specific Remedial Massage

Remedial massage can be defined as the utilisation of a range of physical modalities used in the assessment and treatment of muscular conditions that cause pain and influence the body's human movement.

Can I claim it on my health insurance?

  • Depending on who you are insured with and the level of cover that you have, some health insurance companies will give you a rebate for both sports and remedial massage

What are the Benefits of Remedial Massage?

  • Remedial Massages aids in returning soft tissue to a totally pain free and full functional (strength and length) range of motion
  • Remedial Massage assesses pathological problems, pain and dysfunction, enabling the formation of treatment programs
  • Remedial Massage corrects or improves medical or musculoskeletal disorders of the body.
  • Remedial Massage addresses muscle imbalances which occur when the body is continually fixed in a permanent position or involved in repetitive actions such as range practice or through poor posture (i.e. putting, chipping, driving to and from the golf course or sitting on planes, )
  • Remedial Massage treats and educates on management techniques for back and neck pain, headaches, referred pain, overuse injuries and postural complaints
  • Remedial Massages introduces management protocols and preventative measures to reduce the amount of injuries occurring and their severity.

Remedial Massage is a treatment that can be applied specifically to help prevent an injury or the recurrence of a past injury. In a sport like golf where the vast majority of injuries are caused by overuse or are chronic in nature and often a result of poor everyday posture and muscle imbalances resulting in poor technique, this is very important.

Remedial Massage is a hands on approach, working on many levels within the body. It is the unique way in which it combines the various techniques of massage to suit the individual golfer which makes it such a versatile and effective treatment method.

How will it help to enhance my golf game?

  • Reducing tension and anxiety especially when the Golfer feels under pressure allowing golf to be played from a better mental state of mind
  • Assists the lymphatic system acting upon and eradicating toxins that build up in the body e.g. lactic acid build up from walking, practice and playing
  • Reduces muscle tightness that can lead to or cause postural imbalances.
  • Increases range of movement, by loosening stiff joints and tight muscles. Creating a freer more fluid motion in golf
  • Reduces muscle spasm and scar tissue especially in over tight areas
Mentally it also creates body awareness, generates a feeling of well being and can affect the receiver on energetic level too.

Golf Specific Sports Massage

At the Melbourne Golf Injury Clinic we measure our success not by how well the athlete recovers from an injury but how few injuries occur.

  • It is a dynamic style of massage incorporating stretching techniques that can be used prior to activity, during training or post activity.
  • With athletes there is no acceptance of normal function but a desire to achieve perfection time and time again. Golf is no different and our massage recognizes the needs of an athlete. Where conventional treatments aim to restore normal function our aim is to assist the athlete to achieve above average results.
  • Injury is the major risk in the quest for enhanced performance; therefore the primary treatment concern of our golf specific sports massage is injury prevention.
  • Early detection of potential injuries is also another advantage of our golf specific sports massage programs
  • With regular maintenance athletes are able to sustain high levels of performance without injury. This is why top level golfers use it as an integral part of their training regime and pre and post tournament rounds.

From a golfer's point of view our style of Remedial or Sports massage can correct an injury if necessary, or through postural re-training, assist in improving one's game no matter what level or standard he/she plays at.
